Visiting the website:
When you visit the Emboss website, the following information is collected and
logged by Apache (the web server software):
- Your IP address
- The date and time of your request
- The page you requested
- The page that referred you
- Your browser type and OS
This is the default information collected by Apache. This information is not
used to follow your activities, or uniquely identify you. Nor are cookies used
on this site.
This information is only for debugging purposes (for example determining broken
links by searching for 404's in the logs) and for security purposes (such as if
the site is attacked). The logs will not intentionally be given to anyone else,
except when required to by law. The Apache logs are wiped about once a month.
Emboss software (excluding AutoLicence):
No information at all is collected about you or your computer. Nothing is sent
to anyone.
AutoLicence:
For obvious reasons, AutoLicence must uniquely identify your computer. The
following information is collected by AutoLicence:
- Hard disk model and serial number (hard disk locks only)
- Network card MAC address (network card locks only)
-
- Various information about components in your computer (CID locks only)
This information is not sent in this form to Emboss. It is hashed using an
algorithm called SHA1, which essentially turns the information into a string
that uniquely identifies your computer, but reveals no details about it. This
hash is sent to Emboss whenever a licence is requested.
This information is only used for generating licence keys. Again, for obvious
reasons, this information is linked to your login for AutoLicence (otherwise
it cannot be determined the state of your licences). This information is stored
until the key is requested again, when it is replaced with the information in
the new request. Also, licences that have expired have their information wiped
approximately every two months (the licence is not deleted, just the hash is
removed).
Any information you enter in when creating an AutoLicence account is used only
for the purposes of contacting you upon your request. This includes
(but is not limited to) when you request hard copies of manuals or CDs of
software. It will not be used to contact you unless you request such
contact.
As requests are made through Apache, your IP address (etc) is also stored in a
log. This logfile is only checked for attacks on the AutoLicence software, and
IP addresses (etc) are not associated with login names or computer IDs, except
for authenticating connections to AutoLicence.
Again, no information, either the log files, the licence information, nor any
details you supply when creating an AutoLicence account will be intentionally
released to anyone unless required to by law.
